Ford has released a new documentary that shows how the new Mustang Mach-E came to be, from the inception stage to the final product, featuring testimonies from the team behind it as well as Mustang owners.

The new Mustang Mach-E is perhaps the most important new vehicle in the brand’s recent history, and it’s also using one of the most treasured nameplates in the industry, trying to redefine what is a Mustang and what is not.

Ford claims they had to scrap an existing EV project and start fresh in search of making a proper statement, instead of offering a blunt appliance to take you from point A to B. They decided to look at the Mustang for inspiration, but that road turned out to be one bumpy ride.

“I was absolutely adamant that it should not be a Mustang, because to me, it couldn’t possibly deliver upon the Mustang promise,” admits Bill Ford in the documentary. “When I saw that it was going to be an SUV, I really dug my heels in.” The big boss wasn’t initially sold to the idea but apparently changed his mind once he drove it.

The new Mustang Mach-E will be available in a really wide range of models, including two battery options (75.7kWh and 98.8kWh), rear- or all-wheel drive and an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 300 miles (482 km).

The range-topping GT Performance Edition model will offer 459 HP and 612lb-ft (830 Nm) of torque out of its two electric motors and a 0-60mph in the mid-3s. In addition, it’ll feature big Brembo brakes and Ford’s tried and tested MagnaRide adaptive suspension.

The interior is dominated by a 15.5-inch portrait-oriented infotainment screen that runs on Ford’s latest UI, while the driver also gets a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster. It’s a minimalistic approach not too dissimilar to Tesla’s, but there are more physical buttons here than, say, a Model 3.

The first customer examples of the new Ford Mustang Mach-E will hit the road in late 2020.
